Critical shortages, inadequate skill mix and uneven geographical distribution of the health workforce pose major barriers to achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Only 5 out of the 49 countries categorized by the World Bank as low income meet the World Health Organization’s minimum staffing requirements regarded as needed to deliver essential health services related to maternal and child health.
On this list is Tanzania, which is the sixth worst in regards to the density of doctors, nurses and midwives. The WHO recommends the promotion of education and training, recruitment and retention efforts and action taken to correct the imbalance of healthcare workers.
