Health International Journal Article: A Practical Approach to Health System Strengthening in Sub-Saharan Africa

Lowell Bryan, president of the Touch Foundation and a McKinsey director, is co-author of the following article that appeared in the journal, Health International, in December 2009 (issue 9). Bryan and the four other McKinsey authors explore the Touch Foundation and McKinsey's joint efforts to analyze the health systems challenges in the Lake Zone region of Tanzania. Action now on the Tanzanian health workforce crisis: Expanding health worker training - the Twiga Initiative

Based on our experience at Weill Bugando, the Tanzanian Minister for Health and Social Welfare personally asked us to assist his Ministry in scaling up health worker training capacity at the national level. In early 2007, the Ministry developed the Twiga Initiative to dramatically increase health worker production. With the help of McKinsey & Company, we set out to identify a baseline for current national training capacity and to develop and prioritize initiatives intended to help the government achieve health training goals.

Catalyzing Change: Molecular strengthening of the health system in the Tanzanian Lake Zone

Our work at Weill Bugando has demonstrated the necessity of complementing investments in health worker training with initiatives to solve the problems of the larger healthcare system itself, including factors such as recruitment, deployment, in-service support and development opportunities. To better understand these issues, we collaborated with our Tanzanian partners to launch the Lake Zone Initiative. This report outlines findings from the first, diagnostic phase, which identifies key obstacles in the regional health system that surrounds Bugando and outlines interventions to address them.

Investing in Tanzanian Human Resources for Health - An HRH report for the Touch Foundation

This report, based on field research conducted by a McKinsey team working with Touch Foundation staff in 2006, builds on the findings from McKinsey’s initial 2004 field visit to Tanzania. It focuses on the training of highly-skilled human resources for health (HRH) as the primary lever for addressing the global health care crisis and provides a strategy for the Touch Foundation to pursue to address it.
