These new scales will enable the school to be competitive as it expands from 85 students to 135 students in September this year. The budget provides for some fifteen new academic staff and sixteen new support staff, as well as increased allowances for materials and supplies.
Additionally, Touch has created a new fund for student support over the next academic year. We will pay for all out-of-pocket costs, including accommodation and tuition costs, for second, third and fourth-year students. By covering those costs not already met by the Tanzanian government, students will effectively study for free after their first year, ensuring they don’t graduate with hefty debts.
Finally, as our medical students move into their clinical training, eight senior physicians from BMC will have clinical appointments at BUCHS, and will receive compensation for their additional academic duties. All other doctors will also receive a percentage increase from Touch to help BUCHS become the best in East Africa by providing skilled teaching and support.
