JHMI seeks to improve international health by working with partners to transfer knowledge and implement Hopkins models of medical education and patient care around the world.

The JHMI team that will soon travel to Bugando to conduct this study consists of six experts from the fields of hospital design, infection control, medicine, nursing, human resources and operations, and will be accompanied by a project manager from JHMI and a Touch associate.

Working with the guidance of Bugando officials, the team will spend one week in Mwanza to evaluate the structural, procedural and organizational needs of the medical center, including both medical and ancillary services. In addition to their evaluation of current procedures and care services for in-patients, the team will also be considering the most effective methods for handling outpatient care at BMC.

The JHMI team will build upon the findings of four previous partial assessments that we have received from healthcare professionals who have visited or worked at Bugando. JHMI will leverage this existing knowledge as they undertake a holistic evaluation of the underlying layout of the entire medical complex, examining systemic and infrastructural issues across the hospital.

At the end of their assessment, JHMI will produce a prioritized plan that will allow us to determine the most efficient manner in which to help BMC reorganize the physical hospital space, and then assist in fully reengineering the hospital and its processes to improve the delivery of care and increase capacity for training healthcare workers.
