In March 2007, Bugando Medical Centre Director Dr. Charles Majinge visited us in New York to spend one week at the Weill Cornell Medical Center (WCMC) before attending a Stanford-sponsored two week leadership program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

As partner medical institutions, BUCHS and Weill Cornell are exploring ways in which they can assist and learn from each other. During his week in New York, Dr. Majinge observed the operations at WCMC and interfaced with the doctors to draw information that he hopes to apply at Bugando. Specifically, Dr. Majinge spent much of his time with the department heads at Weill Cornell to observe the practices and policies that have enabled effective inter-departmental collaboration at WCMC.

One of the highlights of Dr. Majinge’s week at WCMC was the opportunity to participate in a video teaching session between Weill Cornell and the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. Lending his own ob/gyn expertise to the discussion, Dr. Majinge was very impressed with the delay-free transmission and found the video session to be a highly effective teaching tool. We hope that we will soon be able to bring Bugando’s it system to the level that will allow for utilization of such a valuable teaching resource.

Following his busy week in New York, Dr. Majinge flew to California to attend a Stanford leadership program specifically designed for non-profit organizations to address the common hurdles they face. With approximately fifty participants from a wide range of not-for-profits around the world, the program used case studies to teach problem solving skills and address topics such as implementing management strategies, managing bottlenecks, and increasing efficiency and time maximization.

Of specific interest to Dr. Majinge were sessions on index analysis that helped the leaders identify measurable indicators to gauge institutional performance, recognize biases within their institutions, and identify their comparative advantages. Dr. Majinge found these skills particularly helpful and has already begun to put them to use in the management of Bugando Medical Centre.
