Why Tanzania?

Despite growth in investment, healthcare delivery in Africa is seriously hindered by weak human capacity and virtually non-existent health systems. While much of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) suffers from deteriorating weak public health infrastructure, Tanzanian has an especially acute shortage of healthcare workers: in Tanzania there are approximately 6 health workers per 10,000 people, compared to 14 on average in SSA. This severe shortage is allowing hundreds of thousands of Tanzanians to die each year from diseases that are preventable, treatable, and curable. The Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare recently declared that the country is suffering a health crisis and has reached out to the international community for help in addressing this national emergency.
